- Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your cake pan(s). For a standard round cake, use two 8-inch pans or one 9×13 inch pan.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
- Alternate Wet and Dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix!
- Divide and Bake: Pour the batter into your prepared pan(s) and bake for 30-35 minutes for round pans or 35-40 minutes for a 9×13 inch pan, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool Down: Let the cake cool in the pan(s) for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
